Eric Arthur-Blair - better known as George Orwell - was born on 25 June 1903 at Motihari, Bengal. He was educated at Eton and from 1922 to 1927 served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. After two years living in Paris he returned to England, working succesively as a private tutor, schoolteacher and bookshop assistant. Wounded whilst fighting in the POUM militia on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War, Orwell served in the Home Guard during the Second World War. After a period as a Talks Producer for the Indian Service of the BBC, he joined the Tribune and was later a special correspondent for the Observer. He died in London in January 1950.
