LCD Screens - LCD screens suck far less energy than plasmas, though they're more limited in their brightness, contrast, and color range. In a TFT (thin-film transistor) LCD, a light source behind the display illuminates each pixel more or less equally and constantly. That light passes through polarization filters and other layers before emerging from the display at about half its original intensity. This is why most LCDs aren't as bright as a plasma screen or a good CRT--and the reason their viewing angles are more limited, though new technologies like active-matrix screens are rapidly improving LCD viewing angles. LCD panels are free from two concerns that plague both plasma and CRT projection sets: phosphor burn-in, which imprints a "ghost" image on screen after holding a static image too long; and convergence errors (discrepancies in beam alignment), which require a service technician to realign the projection picture tubes in a CRT model.
